Course Overview

Have you ever heard of microaggressions? Would you know if you saw a microaggression?

Microaggressions are a real problem in diverse workplaces. They create drama and conflict, not to mention serious harm to those who are targets.

If you’ve ever put your foot in your mouth or been called out for saying something insulting to someone who’s different from you, then you know how uncomfortable this situation can be. And if you don’t really understand why it was a problem or how to avoid it in the future, this course is for you.

On the other hand, if you’ve ever had someone at work put you down or make inappropriate comments because you’re a woman, or from a different background, or from some other marginalized group, then you know how demoralizing that can be. Over time, it can keep you from performing to your potential. This course will help you pinpoint some of these issues and validate your experience.

The EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) considers microaggressions as part of a “hostile work environment”—one where people from marginalized groups are made to feel inferior, like outsiders or undeserving of respect, so that it’s difficult to participate fully. It’s a form of discrimination and a serious matter.

In this course, you’ll gain insight into what microaggressions are, where they come from, the impact they have, and how to identify and respond to them. You’ll also learn how to avoid microaggressions in the first place and what to do if you commit a microaggression. With the tools from this course, you’ll be able to contribute to a productive, inclusive workplace where everyone is valued.
